Workshop

The workshop was adjacent to the 'Dutch Barn' restaurant on the South side. The two probably had strong historic business links, with this and other nearby workshops building wherries and the original 'Dutch Barn' premises supplying the sails. Perhaps surprisingly, considering its flood-prone location, the building had a semi-basement where Stanley Aldrich worked. Although it was a substantial, brick-built building, it was totally destroyed in the 1953 floods along with several bungalows to the south.. (LM)

Stanley Aldrich - Boat builder and model boat maker and maker of high-class woodwork
(K1933) See Joe Mason's blog on his memories of Stanley Aldrich.

During the summer months, Stanley Aldrich abandoned woodwork in favour of running a refreshment kiosk on the beach, thought to be close to Gun Hill.(LM)
